  New suggestions by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to expand the warning label on popular antidepressant medications like Paxil, Zoloft and Prozac have the potential to make a declining mental health situation worse on the Coast, say mental health professionals.

  The FDA proposed last week that makers of these antidepressants - known in medical parlance as Selective Serotonin Re-uptake Inhibitors, or SSRIs - expand the black box warning on their labels to include the possibility of increased suicidal thinking among 18- to 24-year-olds. The previous warning included those under age 18 as well.

  Some mental health professionals said last week that while it is good to ask doctors and patients to be cautious when taking antidepressants, their main concern is that the warning will scare people off from the medication all together.
