More Fitness and Nutrition Headlines:8 Secrets Of The Naturally Slim  (Related)

Dining out every day for every meal, whether you're traveling on vacation or for an extended business trip, can be a real problem when it's not just your suitcase that's getting heavier.

Sure, leaving home means experiencing the sights and sampling new tastes, but getting too far away from your normal diet and fitness regimen can change the way you feel and the way your jeans fit in a hurry. That doesn't mean you have to ban pina coladas by the pool or skip big dinners with clients, but it does mean making adjustments when you're on the road.

Anita Cotter, who is a public relations and marketing consultant for hotels around the world, knows this fitness challenge well.

"My schedule can be very exhausting when I travel," she says. "I find a 30-minute workout at the end of the day before dinner can be a wonderful energizer. It's better than a nap, and it burns some calories."

Happily, fitness centers and spas are standard equipment at most major hotels and resorts these days.

"Guests simply demand a good workout facility," Cotter says. "If a particular hotel doesn't have workout options, shop around for one that does."

For instance, Le Parker Meridien's New York location not only has a state-of-the-art fitness center called Gravity, it has a swimming pool. And the hotel's restaurant, Norma's, boasts a bevy of healthy breakfasts, including oatmeal "risotto" and an egg white frittata of shrimp, roasted tomatoes and spinach.

If you like to exercise while you explore a new city, many hotels also provide jogging maps with safe routes in the area and can even arrange for a running mate if you're nervous about getting lost or being alone.

One of the great freedoms of travel is escaping kitchen duty. Whipping up breakfast, lunch or dinner is as easy as dialing room service. But before that hotel bathrobe is the only thing that fits, Cotter offers some advice.

"Beware of the room service continental breakfast pastry basket," she says. "There's enough in there for a week. I try to order whole-grain toast or cereal with skim milk instead."

Registered dietitian Joanne Lichten, author of "How to Stay Healthy & Fit on the Road," adds that you should avoid having dessert at breakfast.

"A medium Danish has a belt-stretching 400 calories," she says, adding that a "what-the-heck-I'm-on-vacation" Belgian waffle can contain up to 500 calories before you add the toppings. So Lichten advises, "At about 200 calories each, pick butter, syrup or whipped cream. Not all three!"

The good travel news is that room service menus at many hotels today offer way more than steaks and club sandwiches. Registered dietitian Elisa Zied, author of "So What Can I Eat?", says she was recently impressed with the room service meals at a Marriott in Syracuse, N.Y.

"The menu featured lots of options, including lots of salads," she says. "I was able to design my own lighter dinner by ordering bruschetta with fresh tomatoes and a shrimp cocktail. It was just the right amount for me."

The room service menu at Twelve Hotel in Atlanta's Atlantic Station is not only accessible via an in-room computer system, but its contemporary flair includes healthier fare from the hotel's restaurant Lobby. Specialties include a turkey sandwich with avocado, sprouts and a cranberry-apple compote or roasted chicken with sauteed vegetables. If you want an after-workout snack, you can order the Sporty Pack, with bottled water, fruit smoothies, a fresh fruit platter and a granola bar.

But even with healthier menu options and arguably more time to exercise when you're on vacation, it's not always easy to stay true to fitness goals on the road.

"As hard as you try, it's easy to gain a few pounds on a trip," Cotter says. "But if I cut back right away when I get home, the pounds tend to disappear quickly. My clothes usually tell me everything I need to know!"
