Police warning in laptop scam
POLICE are warning people to be aware of a laptop scam which has already seen three people tricked out of hundreds of pounds.
The victims have coughed up cash for what they believed was a cheap laptop, but which turned out to be a laptop case weighed down with groceries or leaflets.
Two such incidents occurred in the town on Saturday afternoon.
Between 1pm and 1.30pm a man was approached behind the Debenhams store and encouraged to hand over £300 for a laptop by a man who showed him the goods in the boot of his car.
After the money was handed over and the offender had left, the victim discovered the laptop case contained a bag of potatoes.
The second incident occurred between 2.30pm and 3pm where the victim was approached as he walked along Clough Lane, behind the multi-storey car park.
He was shown two Sony laptops in the back of a small blue four-door car parked in the lane.
He agreed a price of £440 for both and handed over the cash in return for the rucksack he had seen the laptops placed into. The rucksack was later found to contain a large quantity of leaflets and a car mat.
A similar incident happened in the car park of Morrisons supermarket last Sunday, when the laptop bag contained two bottles of lemonade.
Police are linking the incidents and say the offender spoke with an English or Irish accent. No further description is available.
The victims are believed to have been targeted at random although in each of these cases they have been foreign nationals.
Police spokeswoman Beth Manning said: "This man has tricked at least three people out of hundreds of pounds – leaving his victims with very expensive laptop cases and a few groceries.
"It goes without saying that anyone selling expensive equipment from the boot of their car - and not at a car boot sale - should be regarded as highly suspicious and reported to police immediately."
Anyone with information about these crimes or who has also been approached by this man is asked to contact Detective Constable Natalie Staff at Lynn CID on 0845 456 4567.
